  • The role of Jifundishe is to serve rural community dwellers by acting as the catalyst for achieving the following objectives:
  • Jifundishe was formed to establish rural libraries in rural areas that have a high concentration of government educational institutions for the purpose of promoting literacy at all age levels.
  • Jifundishe was formed with the intention of providing educational opportunities that are relevant to and fit the needs of the local community.
  • Jifundishe was formed to promote the sharing of skills and ideas between rural Tanzanians and volunteers from abroad in an effort to strengthen positive community ties among people of diverse cultures and create a global awareness of the developing world.
  • Jifundishe was formed to promote opportunities for financial assistance for the education of orphans and marginalized children.

 


 

Robert Mafie, Chairman, is ACCT Coordinator for the Mkombozi project that brings affordable computers to Tanzania. He has been involved in work with the street children at Mkombozi and the ACCT program trains participants to be hardware and software technicians. Robert has a history of volunteering in Tanzania and was the head of the computer department at United African Alliance Community Center in Imbaseni. Robert lives in Moshi with his wife and two children.


Debra Kelly, Executive Director is a Human Resource Professional from Wethersfield, CT, U.S.A. After a career in both HR and computer software consulting she came to Tanzania in 2001 to volunteer at a local community center in the Maji ya Chai area. Realizing that there were many needs in the community that were not being addressed by currently established NGO’s, she founded Jifundishe, an organization that provides educational opportunities to rural villagers. She is committed to a transparent organizational process and to utilizing the resources of Tanzanians wherever possible. Debra lives in Ngongongare Village, AruMeru District, Tanzania.



Sam Obae
, Vice Chairman, is a professionally trained filmmaker and is a qualified camera operator and editor. He is currently working for the Kilimanjaro Film School in Tengeru, Tanzania. He has helped write, produce and direct several films and has been awarded a seed grant from National Geographic All Roads Film Project to help support the making of The Warangi Tribe and Kolo Paintings.He lives in Arusha with his wife and daughter.


Fadhily Omary Kiure, Co-Secretary, is currently an employee at KADCO and is the Manager of Security at Kilimanjaro International airport. He graduated from Tumaini University in Iringa with a Bachelor of Law degree. He has held positions as a legal intern at the Attorney General’s Office in Moshi and has written research on the law and protection of disabled persons in Tanzania. He lives in Maji ya Chai.



Christina Burnham, Treasurer, is a social worker currently living in North Carolina. She has been involved with Jifundishe since 2005 and has been an active fund-raiser and volunteer coordinator for the past three years. She was the driving force behind the completion of the Ngongongare Health Dispensary and is committed to the empowerment of women in Tanzania.


Ally Mhina Mjuga, Co-Secretary is originally from Tanga Region but has been in the Arumeru area for over 10 years. He is an accomplished artist and is trained in sculpting, painting, batik, and quilting. He is the founder of Tekua, an NGO that teaches young people art, English and computer skills and he currently lives in Maji ya Chai with his wife and son.


A member of the first Imbaseni Free Library Project Committee, Anande has joined our committee as the liaison for women's programs. She is the head of Computer Studies at the Usa River campus of St. Jude's School in Arusha and has a background in IT.

Jifundishe is a registered non-governmental organization that funds and manages projects for community development that provide educational opportunities to people living in rural villages. The organization was founded in 2003 and since its inception has funded and managed projects at orphanages, schools, health clinics and community centers.
